DID YOU KNOW?
New Year’s Day is filled with traditions and we have a few of our own in South Carolina. When South Carolinians gather around the table for New Year's Day dinner you are likely to find collard greens and black-eyed (or field) peas on the table. According to tradition, eating collards and black-eyed peas on New Year’s Day promises a year of good luck and financial reward. The leaves of collard greens represent dollar bills and peas represent coins.  In many parts of South Carolina, especially in the Low Country, they take the black-eyed peas one step further and they are served “Hoppin’ John” style, a mixture of black-eyed peas, rice and ham hocks or bacon. Although there are many stories as to the origin of the name, one of the more popular is that they were named after a lively server in a Charleston restaurant.  Regardless of your meal, or how you celebrate, we wish you a happy and prosperous 2010!
